Ordinary Diploma in Health Promotion (NTA Level 6)


HP 06101 Foundations of Health promotion

  In this module the students will be introduced to the foundations of Health Promotion to prepare them for the health promotion course. On completion of the module students should be able to: apply the concepts and principles of health promotion, identify behaviors that tends to promote or compromise health, apply experiences in shaping patterns of health behaviors, identify and apply contemporary participatory approaches and techniques in HP, apply the principles and approaches of developing HP educational materials and understand the relationship between HP and HE.


HP 06102 Health Promotion Principles and Approaches

  In this module the students will be introduced to the Principles and Approaches in Health Promotion. During the course the students will be taken through the rationale of health promotion, key elements of health promotion and the methods of health promotion. On completion of the module the students should be able to relate key elements of health promotion apply health promotion methods in strengthening community action for health development.


HP 06103 Health and development

  This module will enable the students to recognize the determinants of health, recognize the contemporary developmental issues affecting health i.e. gender, poverty, globalization, millennium development goals. Furthermore the will enable the students to identify physical, social, emotional, economic, and cultural and literacy factors influencing health behaviors. On completion of the course students will be able to apply the determinants of health in


HP 06104 Communications and Advocacy

  In this module students will be introduced to the process of communication, communication skills and on different channels of communication. In addition to that students will be introduced to the concept, principles and approaches of advocacy as well as steps and approaches of conducting advocacy. On completion of the module students should be able to identify and use appropriate media for health promotion, perform mentoring, coaching, advising, counseling and guidance, apply principles and techniques of community and popular theater and conduct advocacy for health action.


HP 06105 Information Technology

  In this module the students will be introduced to the basics of computer and word processing. During the lessons, the students will receive lectures on computer hardware and software, operating system word processing and search of information through the internet. Students will also have a chance to practice skills with computer and they will have to do assignments with word processor. On completion of the course, the students will be able to; use manual and basic computer applications to analyze data, use of internet and intranet to search and retrieve information, use word processing hardware and software, use publishing hardware and software, use spreadsheet hardware and software and use database software (access dBase).


HP 06106 Epidemiology, Statistics and Demography

  The students will be equipped with knowledge and skills in epidemiological methods to assess distribution of health and disease, disease causation, prevention and control (HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis) and screening and surveillance as essential components in health promotion. On completion of the course the students should be able to recognize epidemic control and disaster preparedness and to recognize and develop tools for gathering epidemiological data. Furthermore they should be able to apply basic statistical concepts and principles in HP, identify different types and sources of data, different methods of data collection, present and analyze data in various forms, identify the concepts of demography and factors of population change, sources of population data and information, describe population pyramid and its impact to health, population projection in service and target areas.


HP 06107 Evidence Based, and Knowledge Management

  In this module the students will study evidence based and knowledge management for health action. This will be achieved by equipping the students with principles and techniques of data collection. On completion of the course the students should be able to; identify different sources and systems of information, develop and use simple tools for data collection, demonstrate ability to collect and retrieve data, understand means of storage, interpret qualitative and quantitative data in relation to determinants of health, compile health promotion experiences and reports and recognize methods of information dissemination.


HP 06108 Primary Health Care and Community Based Health Care

  The module will introduce the students to the concepts, approaches and principles of PHC and CBHC to promote health. On completion of the module the students should be able to apply; various participatory approaches in health promotion, conduct community entry process in health promotion, recognize community initiatives support techniques, recognize the relationship between health promotion and primary health care strategy and establish health needs.


HP 06201 Planning and Management

  The module will equip the students with basic principles and concepts of management and administration, planning process, monitoring and evaluation of health promotion interventions. On completion of the course the students should be able to develop a plan for a health promotion program/intervention, recognize key elements of monitoring, evaluating and supervising health promotion activities, develop proposal for health promotion intervention, monitor and evaluate health promotion activities, formulate advocacy plan and identify and develop appropriate health promotion interventions/programs.


HP 06202 Practices and Partnership

  In this module the students will study the concepts, principles and approaches of partnership development. On completion of the course students should be able to identify partners and stakeholders in health promotion, recognize key elements of memorandum of understanding (MOU) and common understanding with partners. Furthermore the students will be able to formulate memorandum of understanding/common understanding with partners, recognize essential steps and techniques for networking for networking with partners and stakeholders, involve and coordinate partners in health promotion initiatives.


HP 06203 Health Economics and Entrepreneurship

  The students will study the concepts of health economics, principles, and approaches of entrepreneurship. Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to; recognize contemporary issues in health economics and entrepreneurship relate health economics concepts, principles and approaches of entrepreneurship with health promotion, recognize the steps and approaches of entrepreneurship and initiate entrepreneurial ventures.


HP 06204 Health Learning Materials

  In this module the students will study the process involved in the development of health learning materials for health promotion. Upon completion of the course the students will be able to; recognize the process of designing, production and use of audio-visual materials for health promotion interventions, identify and operate equipment for production of various printing and graphics for health promotion.


HP 06205 Teaching Methodology

  In this module the students will study the concepts and principles of teaching and learning. Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to; prepare lesson plan, recognize and use facilitation methods, assess and evaluate the session, prepare and produce manuals and audio visual aids, prepare, use and maintain facilitation equipments, organize and conduct meetings, workshops and seminars.


HP 06206 Healthy Policies and Ethics

  The students will study health policies and ethics in health. On completion of the module the students will be able to; perform within legal and ethical boundaries, maintain confidentiality, recognize self, client, provider and public interests, explain the national health policy and describe national health policy guidelines on health promotion.


HP 06207 Community Based Practice

  After completion of HP 06108 (Primary Health Care and Community Based Health Care Module), the students will be exposed into integrated practical learning. The aim of the integrated practical learning is to enable the students to correlate health promotion concepts, community empowerment and networking for health action. The integrated practical learning will take four weeks duration. On completion of the integrated practical learning program the students will be able to; conduct community entry process and social interaction in initiating health promotion activities, conduct community needs assessment prioritization and planning, working with community and produce community plan on health promotion.
